Highclimbers Claim Honors In Silverdale's 'AA' Event

Shelton Highclimbers slipped by the East Knights and whomped the South Kitsap Wolves to claim the class AA basketball jamboree championship Saturday night at Silverdale.

A field goal by Shelton guard Bill Sloan was last bucket in 16-15 count over East in the first quarter. In the championship final period, the 'Climbers routed SK, 17-7.

The Wolves had defeated Central Kitsap Cougars, 18-11, in the second period to earn the finale berth.

East captured the consolation third panel, 18-13, over CK.

FIRST PERIOD was most exciting one of the night with Sloan's basket about a minute before the final gun surprisingly the last points. Neither team could find twine in the remaining moments.

Knights need alternate platoons in the two quarters in which they appeared. It was the second group that downed Central after the starting unit had just missed on eventual evening champions. Larry Beach was lone Knight to see action in both East quarters.

Sloan, one of four veteran starters for the overall tall and strong rebounding 'Climbers, was night high individual scorer with 12. He got eight of them against East.

Wolves couldn't find the outside range against Shelton, having to settle for seven free throws for their entire count in the climactic 10 minutes.

Knights were quick and drove to many of their baskets against CK.

SECOND QUARTER was tied at 10-10 at the end of the regular 10 minutes allotted each quarter. In the overtime, CK managed to net just a free throw by Bruce Coon while SK roared ahead on two field goals by Steve Lovely and four free throws by Tom Erickson.

Sloan, Lovely and Joe Burroughs of CK indicated best prospects of top outside shooting for the coming season. Burroughs hooped the farthest shot, about a 30-footer against SK.

All the teams except Shelton bow in their campaigns next Friday night - East at Bothell, South Kitsap at Sequim and Central Kitsap at North Kitsap. Shelton has a Saturday night date at home against Olympia.
