Two straight class AA tournament trail truimphs lie behind the West Wildcats as they march through the usual ragged basketball campaign before the year end holiday.
Last night the North Kitsap Vikings were the victims, 58-47, in a contest more ragged than usual. A total of 41 personal fouls were called, three technical foujls awarded and two players ejected from a game that failed to make even the victors very happy.
West was in control of the affair all the way. The 'Cats took care about most of their shots, firing only 40 times from the field but hitting 19 for 47 percent. That was two more goals than the Vikings could collect in 64 attempts in a cool 26 per cent.
Senior Steve Schumacher, 6-2 letterman who started at guard instead of at forward last night, took game individual honors with 16 points. He sank seven of 16 attempts from the floor and two of three free throw tries.
Leon Leslie, his sidekick in the backcourt, talled 11. He made good four of his seven goal ventures and three of four charity tosses in his somewhat limited playing time.
Head coach Bob Smith of West used all 15 varsity players and 11 of them contributed to the point total.
Forward Jerry Williams, 5-11 senior veteran, paced NK with 10 points.
Early in the contest it didn't appear that either team woujld attain 40 points, much less the final total. A free throw by Wildcat forward J.D. Tamerius broke the scoring ice after a minute and a half of fulity by both teams.
By the end of the first period, West lead only 11-6 and the halftime margin of 24-18 wasn't much more significant. However, both quintets continued to increase their scoring paces each quarter although West won all four of them.
Among all the other frustrations the visiting Vikings suffered, the worst must have been the lid on the free throwing. It was bad enough to lack equal height with the host 'Cats, fail to shoot as accurately in the field and to draw slightly more attention from the officials in the way of personal foujls. Their luck in the first half when given charity chances was incredible.
Vikings missed seven free throws in the first quarter - enough to have given them the lead in that eight minutes - and didn't break through for a gift point until junior forward Paul Kristensen sank two of them midway through the second period. At halftime they had that pair in 12 attempts.
Oddly enought, it was the free throws in the last moments that kept the Poulsbo five from falling into complete rout. They sank 10 of 15 tries in that final eight minutes while getting only three field goals out of 18 shots, a feat they had duplicated in the first quarter. ------------------------------ |
That last quarter resembled more melee than basketball at moments. Williams of NK and Les Dicks of West were banished with 3:35 remaining to play and a double technical foul declared while they were entangled on the floor. Williams had one personal and Dicks four when the early retirement was ordered.
Fred Kegel of West had gotten the first technical of the game while complaining about a personal coall on a teammate.
Despite the fact there were 41 fouls, not counting the technicals, the only players benched were the technical pair and only one player on each team had as many as four to his debit.
Shiny or not, the Wildcats defeated the Vikings throughly and carry a 2-1 record into their Capital league contest Tuesday at Stadium. It was North's second loss in a row, both on the AA tourney trail. Tuesday the Viks have an out-of-class Olympic league tilt with Bainbridge at Poulsbo.
B Team Game West (40) - Gordon 13, Shute 19, Jackson, Watson, Chamberlain 5, Matlock 1, Gran 2, Richardson, Egan, Costello. North Kitsap (37) - Wilson, Stadshaug 6, Nordberg 4, Erickson 4, Carlson 16, Ellason 4, Madle 3, Morley. (Overtime)

East Squires Master West Rival, 37-31 East high school’s Squires made it two straight victories and turned back arch-rival West in the process yesterday, pinning a 37-31 defeat on the Wildkittens in the first of two season meetings between the freshmen rivals.
After a slow first period, East jumped into a 15-11 halftime lead, saw it dwindle to two, 25-23, at the end of the third, then pulled away again in the final stanza to seal the verdict.
Rangy Calvin Pharr and guard Allen Albertson set the Squire scoring pace with nine apiece, but received assistance from Butch Miller’s eight counters. Game honors, though, went to Wildkitten Jim White and his 15.
East (37) - Pharr 9, Mount 5, Love 4, Albertson 9, Miller 8, Bohlmann, Nelson 2, Yager, Johnson, Sokolowsky; West (31) - White 15, Harrell 7, Bailey, Ogg, Green 9.
