Weeks prep basketball starts light but finished in a flurry.
Only contest tomorrow night send the West Wildcats to the lair of the Lincoln Abes at Tacoma in a Capital league tilt, put the North Kitsap Viking in the Central Kitsap Cougar den at Silverdale in a class AA tournament trail test and find Port Townsend Redskins at home to the Chimacum Cowboys in a non-league fray.
FRIDAY IS a different picture altogether – three double-A tourney path games, two single-A Olympic league mixes and one Olympic out-of-class affair.
Five more games are on tap Saturday but only one has league bearing and none have direct effect on either tourney trail.
Knights of East moved to just a step behind West in the AA rankings by whittling South Kitsap Wolves Saturday night, 48-27, in a slow-moving session that found the Bremerton quintet ahead by only 28-21 after three quarters. A 20-point fourth period provided the only fireworks with senior Mike Holen leading with eight points in that eight minutes.
Holen finished with 18 for game individual honors. Forward mate Jim Tienhaara, only other performer in double figures, had 12.
WOLVES COULDN’T find the basket. They garnered only one field goal in the second quarter and one in the fourth in a 32-minute collection of just seven goals altogether.
The deliberate style of play saw East attempt only 48 goals in the contest, hitting 16 for 33.3 per cent. Knights grabbed 50 rebounds to dominate the backboards as well as the score.
Halftime count was East 32, SK 14 after the Knights had taken a 15-9 first-quarter advantage.
High scorer for SK was senior forward Rick Piercy with eight points as he failed to hit from the field but sank eight of 10 free throw attempts. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ THE BIG doings Friday will have Shelton at West, Central Kitsap at East and South Kitsap at Port Angeles in AA tourney trail collisions. Single-A games match Port Townsend at Bainbridge and Forks at North Mason. Sequim at North Kitsap is an Olympic league out-of-class contest.
Bainbridge at Port Angeles is only Saturday loop session, also out-of-class, while Shelton hosts North Thurston, Sequim invades Vashon, Forks entertains Lakeside and North Mason visits Quilcene in non-league trails.
PEEWEES Manette Clips N. Perry Foe Jump shot by Mel Sokolowsky with two minutes left and a stall the rest of the way gave unbeaten Manette a 21-30 win over North Perry and preserved a league-leading tie with Silverdale in county peewee action the past weekend.
North Perry fell to a tie with Naval Avenue, Warren Avenue and Sheridan Park although still in third spot in the circuit.
Four times North Perry had free throw opportunities in the last two minutes but couldn’t convert one to avert the setback or two to gain a major upset.
In other results, Silverdale whacked Chico 33-24; Naval Avenue battered Sheridan down to its level, 41-20; Warren Avenue pasted Poulsbo, 30-18; and West Bremerton sneaked by Bainbridge, 19-15. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ High individual count of the five-game slate was Bruce Larson’s 12 point for Warren. Sokolowsky tallied 10 for Manette, a figure matched by Frank Jackson of Naval and Bill Segerman of Silverdale. Ken Lewis and Mike Cross, both of Chico, Terry Showman of North Perry and Rick Herdman of Warren each countered nine.
Four games are on tap next Friday. In a doubleheader at Dewey gym, North Perry and Sheridan Park battle at 6 p.m., and Manette takes on West Bremerton at 7:15. Silverdale hosts Bainbridge while Warren and Naval spar at Smith, both at 7 p.m. Saturday, Poulsbo will be at Chico at 7 p.m. |
