West Ticketed 77-59 Setback TACOMA – A concert of second-half baskets by the Wilson Rams left the West Wildcats in Mood Indigo here last night. The visitors from Bremerton, who had led 39-37 at halftime, were outplayed to a final 77-59 tune.
Gary Birchler, Bill Parker and Jeff Hale combined for 52 points between them, Birchler leading the way with 23 in the Capital league clash that kept alive Ram hopes for circuit glory and buried the Wildcats deeper in the cellar.
WEST ALSO had a trio of double-figure performers. Center Dan Shedwin hooped 16, guard J.D. Tamerius 14 and forward Les Dicks 13.
Game started out for high counts. Wilson took a 21-18 bulge at the end of the first quarter but, outscored by five in the second panel as West equaled the initial Ram collection, were down two at the half.
Only Wilson kept up the pace much beyond intermission.
Score was tied four times in the first three minutes of the third panel but Birchler and Parker suddenly went wild and the ‘Cats became numb. Wilson raced off to a 13-point advantage in the following five minutes.
RAMS USED liberal substitutes in the last few minutes and still managed to increase the final spread.
Best West spurt had been Tamerius three goals and Shedwin’s two to tie the score at 29-all with 3 ½ minutes left in the first half.
Wilson had gone in front to stay with 4:50 remaining in the third quarter on Parker’s lay-in that made it 47-45. Birchler tailled eight points in the last four minutes to give Wilson a 61-48 margin going late the fourth quarter. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Team shooting saw Wilson sink 34 of 73 goals for 46 per cent while West was netting 23 of 60 and 38 percent. At the free throw line, Wilson made good nine of 16 and West 13 of 21.
JUST AS important as the shooting mastery was Wilson’s backboarding. The Rams outrebounded West, 52-39.
Friday West goes to South Kitsap for an Olympic peninsula class AA tournament trail test.

County Grads Abet UPS Win
TACOMA – The University of Puget Sound Loggers with a .515 shooting percentage, scored an 85-70 victory over Seattle Pacific in a nonconference basketball game Tuesday.
The Loggers hit on 19 of 34 attempts in the first half and led 48-33 at halftime.
The Seattle Pacific Falcons ended with a .376 shooting percentage.
BOB ABELSETT was high for the winners with 27 points.
The contest featured a sideline battle involving former Kitsap county products Bill Hansen and Dick Dahlstrom of Puget Sound and Gary Wortman of Seattle Pacific.
Hansen, West high graduate who later played two seasons at Olympic college was runner-up to Aberlsett for Logger scoring honors with 18. He had a particularly hot hand during the first half onslaught, collecting 12 of his night’s bag.
The 6-5 Dahlstrom, heaviest man on the UPS roster at 230 pounds saw service as understudy to starting center Fred Wilde and chipped in with four tallies. He’s a freshman by way of North Kitsap high school.
WORTMAN, SENIOR captain of Seattle Pacific, had one of his off nights from the field, connecting for only six points on a bucket and four gift tosses.
Even in the preliminary fray there was a Kitsap county touch. Former South Kitsap player Terry Fein scored seen as the SPC jayvees dumped the Logger second, 69-51. Dahlstrom, starting center in that one, had four UPS points.
------------------------------ Peninsula Hoop Shoot Competition Underway Junior high school boys of the Olympic Peninsula and Bremerton are sharpening their shooting eyes for the annual state-wide hoop shoot elimination now underway.
Sponsored in this area by the Bremerton department of parks and recreation and The Sun, the contest is open to all boys 14 years of age or under as of March 16, 1963.
Preliminary eliminations will be held in the various junior high schools, followed by the district finals at Sheridan Park community building gymnasium on Saturday, March 9. The state finals will be held in the University of Washington Hec Edmundson pavilion, on March 16, final day of the Washington state class AA high school basketball championships.
All junior high schools in this area will send their champion to the district tournament in Bremerton. Schools invited are North Kitsap, Peninsula, Forks, Neah Bay, Quilicene, Port Townsend, Chimacum, South Kitsap, Belfair, Port Angeles, Roosevelt junior high, Clallam Bay, Sequim, Coontz junior high, George Dewey, Star of the Sea, Port Angeles Queen of the Angeles, Central Kitsap and Bainbridge.
Last year’s Olympic champion was Steve Gustafson, Sequim high school, who sank 24 out of 25 shots in the district finals. Mike Eliason of North Kitsap high school earned second place with 22 out of 25. The top three finalists in 1962 will not be eligible to defend their titles this year as all three have passed the tournament age limit. A total of 1,169 boys representing 12 Olympic peninsula schools took part in last year’s hoop shoot.
First place winner in the district finals will be awarded a trophy and the runner-up and third place boys will be awarded medals, courtesy of The Sun. District champion will represent this area in Seattle where he will compete with other district champions from all parts of the state for the state championship, under sponsorship of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.
