Jayvee-Nygard Fray City's Next Goliath Three-way race in the men’s city basketball league will be little marked by tomorrow night’s doubleheader unless hapless Parker Lumbermen turn giant killer.
The Lumbermen, who have won just one of nine games, face undefeated circuit leader TB&M at 7:15 and fourth-place North End takes on last-place Kitsap Lakers at 8:30 in the twin bill in the Olympic college gym.
SATURDAY night’s lone fray between host Olympic college Jayvees and Nygard’s Superette, however, will be a key conflict in the chase to catch TB&M. Jayvees have lost one in nine and Nygard’s has dropped two of a identical number of outings. Victory by the Jayvees, who haven’t met TB&M yet, would heighten and tighten a two-way pursuit for the pennant. Nygard triumph would loosen the effect but maintain a three-way picture with the two Saturday rivals finishing the night tied for second. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Parker is considerably stronger offensively since losing to TB&M early in the campaign, 48-88, but has continued to have defensive problems. TB&M’s Raiders will be playing without Orville Anderson, who holds league high average of 27.2 points per game, because the high school team he coaches is scheduled tomorrow night.
However, Howard Thoemke, with better than 24 points per game, will head the available Raider cast. Thoemke has tallied 194 points to lead his nearest rival in over-all scoring, Pete Refling of the Lakers, by 41 although. Thoemke has played in one less contest.
THIRD SPOT in league tallying is held by Bob Turner, also of the Lakers, who has performed in two more games than any other member of the top 20. Anderson is fourth despite having vied in a mere five games and Jack Jaynes of Nygard’s is fifth.
Fourth in average is Dick Kirkland, Parker pivot who has been a regular in the naval shipyard league for three years and has been playing double duty this winter as starter in both circuits.
Men’s league teams play 18 games apiece. Onley the Lakers are past midpoint, with 11 tilts, and only TB&M hasn’t reached the hallway mark, with eight.
Most important contest remaining for the unbeaten leaders are Feb. 16 against Jayvees; Feb. 18, Nygerd’s; Feb. 20, Jayvees; and March 4, Nygard’s.
In addition, among the five league games which have been postponed and must be made up if bearing on the championship, was the TB&M-Jayvees tilt slated Jan. 18.
Other postponed contest were North End-Parker, Jan. 9, and a triple bill Jan. 30 – TB&M-Olympic Sporting Goods, Nygard’s-Parker and North End-Lakers.
