Despite a poor second half that saw them barely score more than their output in either of the first two quarters, Lincoln’s Abes remain among the state’s unbeaten high school basketball teams today.

The Abes swept aside their fourth straight victim last night, defeating East Bremerton’s Knights 51-42 at the Lincoln gym. Dave Williams led the way with 22 points, 19 of them in the first half, and13 rebounds in addition to leading the fast break in the early going.

The fast break became a fast brake in the second half as East Bremerton crept to within six points of Lincoln in the fourth quarter after trailing by as much as 17 in the first half.  The Knights couldn’t fight the bulling of Williams and 6-4 Gary Walker on the backboards or they might have gone ahead.

Never Trailed

As it turned out, Lincoln never trailed in the game and the score was tied only when John Tracy hit a pair of free throws to even the count at 2-2. Field goals by Williams, Walker and Eddie Anderson game Lincoln an eight-point lead, 16-8, in the first quarter and Williams made it 18-8 with a layin to open the second quarter.

The 6-2 senior and Harold Boss combined for six points to stretch Lincoln’s lead to 17 points at 32-15 with three minutes left in the first half.  East Bremerton still didn’t have a field goal in the second period, but the Knights ended that drought quickly.

Mike Holen ripped free for four points when left alone under the basket and Larry Beach hit a jump shot to pull east to within nine points, 32-23, at halftime.

Anderson and Dennis Buchholz zeroed in with 20-foot set shots and Walker hit a pair of free throws for a 39-27 Lincoln lead with 2:55 left in the third period. The Abes still led by 14 at 44-30 with 1:25 to go in the period, but Holen and Fry cut it to 44-33 when the quarter ended.

Pulled Closer

The black-clad visitors pulled closer when Darrell Fry hit from the corner and slick Greg Morrison scored on a layin to make it 44-37. Jim Tienhaara and Morrison followed Walker’s field goal with two-pointers of their own to get within six points at 48-42 with 5:15 to play.

That was as close as East Bremerton could come. The scoring was all Lincoln’s until 20 seconds remained in the game and the Abes led 51-40.

Holen, who fouled out with 2:49 left in the game, had 11 points for East. Tienhaara, Fry and Morrison each scored nine.

W. Bremerton Falls Before Bengal Rally

By DON DAVISON

A fourth-quarter scoring splurge by Stadium’s Bob Salatino and Bob Sloan pulled out a ragged 46-44 Capital League win over West Bremerton last night in the Tiger gym.

Fans who came expecting to see a display of good basketball went away disappointed, but there was enough wild scrambling to easily maintain the interest of most spectators.

The lead was tied four times and changed hands 13 times in the last half before Sloan finally put Stadium ahead to stay 42-40 on a twisting layin with 1:40 to play.

Sloan followed with a pair of free throws to boost the Tigers lead to 44-40 with a minute remaining. After Jim Stockton missed a free throw, one of 14 blown by West Bremerton during the game. Fred Kegel hit a jump shot from the key with 45 second left.

Clinching Points

Salatino then iced the game for Stadium with a pair of free throws. Steve Schumacher hit a bucket for the Wildcats four seconds later, but Stadium successfully stalled out the remaining 14 seconds to clinch its Capital League opener.

Stadium started off with a 5-1 lead and held the advantage through much of the first quarter. A pair of free throws by West’s Leslie Dicks cut the gap to 12-11 at the break.

Baskets by Don Anderson and Don Rudell opened up a 16-11 margin for the Tigers at the start of the second quarter, the biggest lead of the night for either team, but West kept chipping away and trailed only 29-19 at the half thanks to a three-pointer by Schumacher with 12 seconds left.

The lead bounced back and forth about as fast as the turnovers from there on out and it was still anyone’s game going into the last eight minutes with Tigers ahead 31-28.

Victory Splurge

Then Stadium pulled out the win as Salatino connected for a basket and five straight free throws to go with a two-pointer and three of four charity tosses by Sloan, accounting for 12 of the winners 15 points in the quarter.

Neither team had much success holding onto the ball. Stadium gave it away 21 times on violations and West reciprocated for 17. The big difference in the game was Stadium’s backboard control, 65 rebounds to 45, and West’s missed free throws. Stadium failed on 10 of its charity tries.

Schumacher led all scorers with 17 points, seven in the last quarter as he tried to keep the Wildcats in the game. Sloan and Salatino had 10 apiece to pace Stadium.
