Knights roll, Quilence no longer undefeated

It took Bremerton High’s girls’ basketball team awhile to get revved up last night after its trek to Ingraham, but the Lady Knights outscored class AAA Ingraham 41-16 during the second half to pin a 61-33 non-league defeat on the Rams. Class B power Quilcene, however, wasn’t as successful as the Rangers fell from the unbeaten ranks 50-32 at Darrington.

It wasn’t all bad for coach Ken Aries’ squad, though, as standout guard Sherry Jensen passed the 1,000-point mark for her career.

Bremerton 61, Ingraham 33Stephanie Watson led the Lady Knights’ second-half surge by scoring 14 of her game-high 16 points after intermission.

“We had a slow first half, just like the last couple of games,” said Bremerton coach Doug Wagner. “But we definitely decided to play in the second half and got some turnovers.”

The visitors broke from a 20-17 halftime advantage as Watson began driving to the hoop from the outside. Amy Keller added 11 points for the winners while Watson, Jackie Borja, Shelly Van De Putte, and Beard grabbed seven rebounds each.

“Everybody that travelled with us scored,” Wagner said. “and everybody played well, They (the Rams) weren’t a real strong team and in the first half we sort of played at their level.”

Now 5-3 on the season and 3-0 in Olympic League play, Bremerton is idle until Jan. 3 when it hosts Central Kitsap.

Darrington 50, Quilcene 32 – The brightest spot for the Rangers were Jensen, whose 15 points ran her career total to 1,007.

Jensen was 70of-17 from the field while Quilcene collectively was 14 of 54 for only 26 percent and four of 15 from the foul line for 27 percent.

“This was a game you learn from and throw it away,” Aries said. “It didn’t’ even look like our basketball team.

“It was the worst performance I’ve seen in our last four years other than the consistency of Sherry Jensen and Vickie Canterbury did a good job of blocking out. We just didn’t block anybody else out.”

Quilcene was outrebounded 23-9 on the offensive boards. “Anytime you five a team two and three shots, you’re in trouble,” Aries said.

Both teams are not 6-1. Quilcene plays next Wednesday night at Seattle Lutheran and Dec. 30 at home against Chimacum.
