Coach Les Eathorne's Knights pulled even with the Wildcats Saturday night by making the North Kitsap Vikings their fourth straight AA victim, 47-36, on the grace of superb stamina, the full-court press and a bundle of free throws.
Friday, East hosts the Port Angeles Roughriders and West entertains the Central Kitsap Cougars.
SATURDAY'S Olympic league affair was a runaway for East only in the last few minutes when North's early collection of personal fouls cost three more hands from a squad already limited by illness.
Knights tallied 12 points in the final 4:26 of play after Vik forward Jerry Williams drew his fifth infraction penalty and bowed out. North countered four in the same time. Paul Kristensen, junior forward-center, followed Willims to the bench with 1:38 on the clock - and the Knights collected 10 of those points after that, six at the free throw line.
Third Viking to foul out was junior reserve guard Perry Gnos. Starter Jim Klein and reserve Lee Grey missed the game because of illness.
Guards Greg Morrison and John Tracy, in addition to leading the press that consistently troubled North Kitsap, also led individual scoring in the game. Tracy garnered 13 points, including seven from 12 opportunities at the free throw line. Morrison, mast of the driving lay-in, added 11.
FORWARD Mike Holen, with 10 was the only front-line Knight in double figures. His mate, Jim Tienhaara, was the only Knight in early trouble with a foul count and saw relatively little action.
Only less than customary accuracy from the field kept East from going way out front early. NK turned over the ball more than four times in the early play and still managed to have a 12-12 tie at the end of the first quarter. East managed just one field goal in the entire second quarter but stayed alive on free throws to trail 21-23 at intermission. The frequently deadlocked contest was 31-all at the three-quarter mark.
East ended up 13 for 36 from the floor to North's 13 for 33 but the Knights sank 21 of 36 free throw attempts while the Viking were cashing in only 10 of 19 chances.
TIENHAARA started North's late downfall. He scored all four of his evening's points on a goal and a pair of free throws after Williams' departure to build a five point Knight advantage. Center Darryl Fry jumped in a basket and Morrison stole the ball and soloed to a lay-in just 20 seconds apart; Fry added two free throws and so did Tracy to complete the count.
Last 10 points by East came after North scoring stopped with a apair of free throws by John Eliason with 2:54 remaining to play.
Conquest was East's fourth straight and fifth of the campaign against four early losses. Three of the last four have been on the all-important tourney path toward post-season activity.
For North, it was the second night of frustration in a row. Viks have lost all seven outings, including five in the AA ranks and a tight decision to out-of-class Olympic league rival Sequim Friday night when the Poulsbo quintet had led until the final two minutes. NK will be at Port Townsend Friday. |
